Annual Scholarships for Certification in Addictions Nursing

ANCB is proud to offer two annual scholarships for a CARN and CARN-AP applicant.
The Carolyn Jewell “Steel Magnolia” Scholarship will be awarded to a CARN applicant. This scholarship was initiated in 2018 to memorialize Carolyn Jewell's dedicated work as a Nurse Practitioner in the service of patients with addictions.
The ANCB Members’ Scholarship will be awarded to a CARN-AP applicant. This scholarship was initiated in October of 2019, funded annually by Elizabeth Fidles EdD, CARN-AP, PHNA-BC, FIAAN, in honor of three decades of work by ANCB members continuously improving and enhancing ANCB's certification examination for Addictions Nursing.
The recipients of the scholarships will have their certification examination fee paid for. In addition, the recipients will receive a complimentary, coveted CARN or CARN-AP pin after successfully passing the examination.
Requirements:
- Applicant must meet the current eligibility requirements set forth by ANCB for the CARN or CARN-AP certification examination.

CARN-AP Eligibility Requirements: https://www.cnetnurse.com/ap-carn-exam - Applicant must test for the examination by October 1st of the year their scholarship is awarded.
Application Process:
Please submit the following four items using the form below.
- Full name, email address, employer, and mailing address.
- An essay of approximately 300 words describing your philosophy, vision, and reason for seeking certification.
Tip: ANCB encourages applicants to include their personal journey in their essay. Whether through family, friends, or your own life, you can talk about how your experience(s) shaped your desire to work in the field of Addictions Nursing and what becoming certified would mean to you. - A letter of recommendation from a colleague or supervisor who can speak to your Addictions work.
- A statement that you attest to your education, practice hours and CEs required to sit for the CARN or CARN-AP certification examination.
Application Review:
- Completed applications must be received by Monday, March 31, 2025.
- Essays will be reviewed in a blind process, anonymously by three ANCB Directors including a Public Member.
- The winner of the Carolyn Jewell “Steel Magnolia” Scholarship and the winner of the ANCB Members’ Scholarship will be selected by Monday, April 14, 2025.
Both winners and all applicants will be notified of their status after April 14, 2025.
